California is now a sanctuary state and the two and a half million residents who are undocumented are now given a chance to decide what to do about their legal status in the United States. Attorney General Sessions said that the rule of law of this country will be applied no matter what each individual state decides what to do about the undocumented. There are cities in the state who agree with the government’s policy of arresting and deporting anyone who should not be in this country. The Trump administration has found a way to achieve this goal. In 2020 when the next census will be taken in this country. For the first time since 1950, there will be a question on the census asking if the person is a citizen of this country. Everyone will be counted as that is the law of the land. This combined with the ending of the DACA program will put millions of undocumented people under the radar of Ice agents.
The time to come up with a comprehensive solution to the problem of immigration is now a priority for those who want to stay in this country legally. The Congress has refused to act on the problem that the president put on their agenda. Governor Brown took a bold step when he signed the sanctuary bill. He understands that this state is dependent because of agriculture, and the service jobs that fuel the state’s economy would collapse without these workers doing jobs for the most part Americans won’t do for the wages paid. California once again is leading the country by accepting the fact that this country will not be able to deport those who we depend on to make sure we have food on the table and goods at prices we are used to. This is a reality that this country cannot ignore.
