Once again the events happening in the city of Chicago are capturing the attention of the whole world. This city has become the murder capital of the United States. 700 plus killed in 2016 including thousands of wounded from the unending cycle of violence in the mostly black neighborhoods. This is the city of Elliot Ness, and Al Capone. the city where thousands broke the law when the government said alcohol was illegal. The crime that occurred recently involving a young white male with disabilities was assaulted by a group of young blacks. This was a repugnant act against a helpless individual of another race in a city with a long history of racial segregation. That does not in any way justify what was done to another human being.
As we are preparing to enter the times of President-elect Trump we must remember the undercurrent of racial disparity that has existed in America since the first slaves arrived to do the bidding of the of their masters. We in America can never get away from incidents that have underlying or in this case overt hatred of the victim only because of their race, religion or in some cases their sexuality.
There will be many stories written about this case in the future, that is a given. Once again the land of the free and the home of the brave will be on display for the world and each of us as Americans try to understand why this event happened in the first place.
